Water Sits In My Somerton Park Street After Rain. Is Something Blocked?
Often not. The City of Holdfast Bay deliberately carries stormwater along the road in some of its flatter, low-lying areas and names Somerton Park as one of them, so water can travel a long way down the kerb before it reaches a pit and may sit on the road for a few hours. That’s council’s system working as designed. What we look at is your side of it: if water is pooling in your yard or not leaving your downpipes, the private pipe or kerb outlet is the likely culprit, and that part is the property owner’s to maintain.
Who Is Responsible For The Pipe From My Downpipes To The Kerb?
The property owner. Council’s position is that owners maintain their private stormwater system, including the connection from the property boundary to the approved discharge point, which in most cases is a kerb outlet, and council looks after the street network from there. If your kerb outlet is cracked, blocked or sitting too high, we can clear or replace the line. Work on the kerb connection itself needs council approval, and we’ll explain what that involves.
My Yard Is Lower Than The Street. How Does The Stormwater Get Out?
On a low block, gravity alone can’t get roof and paving water up to the kerb, and council notes that some properties need pumps or other drainage solutions. That usually means a collection pit with a pump, or grated drains feeding one. The pump is part of your plumbing and needs looking after like anything else, so we service, repair and replace them, check the float switch and outlet pipe, and make sure the whole run to the kerb is clear.
Do Units That Share A Driveway Also Share A Sewer Line?
Sometimes. Some groups of single-storey units run their sewer connections into a shared line before it reaches the street, and others have a separate line each. There’s no way to tell from the driveway. A camera inspection shows how your group is actually connected and where a blockage is sitting, so you know whether it’s one owner’s problem or a shared one before anyone pays for anything.
