Heat Pump Systems Adelaide
Heat Pump Hot Water Systems Installed by Your Adelaide Plumbing Team
A heat pump hot water system uses ambient air temperature as its energy source. For every 1kW of electricity it consumes, it delivers 3-5kW of heat into your water tank. That efficiency plus the current rebate stack makes heat pumps one of the lowest-total-cost hot water solutions on the Adelaide market, often with a post-rebate net cost below a standard electric tank replacement.
We’ve spent 15+ years on hot water system replacement across Adelaide. Our licensed team (Licence PGE #360928) installs all major heat pump brands – Sanden, Quantum, Reclaim, Apricus, Chromagen, Rheem Ambiheat, Midea, and Bosch – handles STC, REPS, and City of Adelaide rebate paperwork on your behalf, and backs every install with our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee.
Heat pumps are also the hot water technology the current rebate landscape most favours, with three stacking programs available to eligible installs.

The Three Rebates That Reduce Heat Pump Cost
Three rebate programs stack simultaneously for eligible heat pump hot water installations in Adelaide. Combined, they typically reduce the upfront cost by a substantial margin. Program details and dollar amounts change annually – current figures are published on each program’s own site and we verify at quote stage.
- Federal STCs - upfront price discount
- SA REPS - point-of-sale discount
- City of Adelaide council rebate (postcode 5000 area)
- All three programs stack on one install
- Rebate paperwork handled by us at point of sale
- Current figures verified at quote visit
Rebates are administered at point of sale through us, not claimed back from you. The price on your quote is the net price after verified eligible rebates. Full program details on the Clean Energy Regulator STC page, the SA Government REPS page, and the City of Adelaide Sustainability Incentives page.
Rebate figures change. We verify current program amounts at the quote visit so the saving in your price is accurate on the day, not based on last year’s figures. Call (08) 8152 9100 to book.
Heat Pump vs Solar vs Gas vs Electric Hot Water
Heat pump isn’t the automatic right answer. Here’s the honest comparison.
Heat pump wins when: your roof isn’t suitable for solar (shade, south-facing, structural load concerns), you want to maximise rebate stack (heat pump accesses all three current programs including City of Adelaide), you don’t have an existing gas connection, or you want ground-level equipment without roof work. Northern suburbs like Salisbury and Elizabeth that see extreme summer temperatures often favour heat pumps because heat pump efficiency rises with ambient heat – the system gets cheaper to run on the days you use hot water most.
Solar hot water wins when: your roof has good northerly aspect with minimal shade, you have a household of 3+ with consistent hot water demand, and you value the lowest long-term running cost. See our solar hot water page for detailed solar comparison.
Gas continuous-flow wins when: you have existing mains gas, hot water demand is low or irregular, and electrical upgrades required for heat pump make it impractical.
Electric storage rarely wins. Highest running cost. Only defensible where heat pump is impractical, gas unavailable, and solar unsuitable.
For most Adelaide homes replacing an electric hot water tank, heat pump is the cheapest-total-cost option post-rebate, especially within the City of Adelaide council area where the third rebate compounds the saving. For homes with excellent solar roofs, solar can still edge ahead on long-term running cost. We give you the honest comparison at quote stage, not a pitch for whichever has our better margin.
How a Heat Pump Hot Water System Actually Works
A heat pump hot water system is essentially a reverse-cycle air conditioner wired to a hot water tank. Instead of cooling a room, it transfers heat from the outside air into the water inside the tank. The efficiency ratio – the amount of heat delivered per unit of electricity consumed – is called Coefficient of Performance (COP), and a quality heat pump operates at COP 3-5 through Adelaide conditions.
The refrigerant inside the unit evaporates by absorbing heat from outdoor ambient air at low temperature. A compressor raises the refrigerant’s pressure and temperature. The hot refrigerant transfers its heat to water in the tank via a heat exchanger, then condenses back to liquid and repeats the cycle.
- Refrigerant cycle absorbs heat from outdoor air
- CO2 vs HFC refrigerants - both work in Adelaide
- Operates -10 degrees C to +35 degrees C ambient
- Sizes: 170L / 270L / 315L+ for household needs
- Quiet operation 37-50dB - placement matters
- AS/NZS 3500 plumbing and AS/NZS 5149 refrigeration
Premium units including Sanden and Reclaim use CO2 as the refrigerant – natural, low global warming potential, and usually quieter in operation. Both CO2 and HFC units work well in Adelaide conditions; CO2 units typically sit at the premium end of pricing. Winter mornings in hills suburbs like Stirling (occasionally below 5 degrees C) reduce efficiency marginally but don’t stop operation. Coastal and metro homes see consistent year-round performance.
All installs meet AS/NZS 3500 for plumbing and AS/NZS 5149 for refrigeration safety, with tempering valve fit-off under AS 3498.

Heat Pump Questions Adelaide Neighbours Ask Us Most
How much does a heat pump cost installed in Adelaide after rebates?
A heat pump install represents a significant upfront cost, meaningfully reduced after the full rebate stack is applied. STC and REPS rebates stack on every install, with the City of Adelaide rebate available on top for eligible CoA properties (postcode 5000 and adjacent). Current figures on each program’s site change annually. We verify eligibility at the quote visit and apply every rebate you qualify for, so the price on your quote is the net rebate-inclusive figure. Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee on every install under Licence PGE #360928.
What rebates can I claim - STC, REPS, and City of Adelaide?
Three programs stack. Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are federal – see the Clean Energy Regulator. Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) is South Australian – see the SA Government REPS page. City of Adelaide council offers an additional rebate for properties within the CoA area – see the City of Adelaide Sustainability Incentives page. Figures change annually. We verify at quote stage and apply all eligible rebates upfront.
Is heat pump better than solar hot water for my home?
For most homes with limited roof or within City of Adelaide boundaries (third rebate accessible), heat pump is the cheaper net option. For homes with excellent northerly roof aspect and household of 3+, solar wins on long-term running cost despite the smaller rebate stack. See our solar hot water page for the reverse comparison. We give you an honest recommendation, not a pitch.
Are heat pumps noisy?
Modern units run 37-50dB – comparable to a quiet dishwasher. Premium CO2 units (Sanden, Reclaim) are among the quietest at 37dB. Placement matters, not against a neighbour’s bedroom wall, and not against your own bedroom wall either. We position for lowest noise impact during the site assessment.
Do heat pumps work in Adelaide winter?
Yes. Modern heat pumps operate from about -10 degrees C to +35 degrees C ambient. Adelaide averages well within that range year-round. Hills mornings in Stirling or Mount Barker occasionally below 5 degrees C reduce efficiency marginally but don’t stop operation. The storage tank buffers overnight demand through morning peak use.
Can I finance the post-rebate balance with Humm?
Yes. After rebates are applied upfront, Humm finances the balance in regular instalments*, no deposit, fast approval. On typical post-rebate balances, Humm comes out at modest monthly amounts. Our team handles both rebate paperwork and Humm application. *Terms & conditions apply. Chat with a team member to discuss options.
