Blocked Toilet Adelaide
Blocked Toilet Repairs from Your Adelaide Neighbourhood Plumbers
A blocked toilet is the one emergency plumbing problem that genuinely cannot wait until tomorrow. Whatever’s caused it, the next decision matters. Reach for the wrong tool and you crack a porcelain bowl. Reach for chemical drain cleaner and you damage the trap and the pan seal without actually clearing the blockage. The right move is a plunger, an auger, or a phone call.
We’ve spent 15+ years clearing blocked toilets across every Adelaide home – from heritage Norwood and Stepney properties where the actual problem is often a tree root in the 1920s sewer lateral 10 metres outside the house, to new builds in Salisbury and Mawson Lakes where the cause is almost always something that shouldn’t have gone down. Our licensed team (Licence PGE #360928) diagnoses the actual cause, clears it without damaging the bowl or the pipe, and tells you whether the issue ends at the toilet or sits further down the line.
Every job is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee, 260+ five-star Google reviews from Adelaide neighbours, our Clean Home Guarantee, and our We Fix It or It’s Free* promise.
What Causes a Blocked Toilet in Adelaide Homes
A toilet sits at the end of a pretty simple piece of plumbing. The water flushes the contents through an internal trap (the curved passage built into the porcelain), out through the pan collar, into a waste arm, and through the sewer lateral that runs from your house to the council main in the street. Blockages happen at one of those points, and which point matters more than most people realise.
- Wet wipes, sanitary products, and other non-flushables
- Excessive toilet paper in a single flush
- Hard water scale narrowing the rim and trap
- Tree roots in pre-1970s earthenware sewer laterals
- Foreign objects (toys, cotton buds, dental floss)
- Damaged or collapsed sewer line past the house
Things that don’t break down. “Flushable” wet wipes, sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds, dental floss, paper towels – none of these dissolve in water the way toilet paper does. Wipes are the worst offender. Despite the marketing, no plumber we know agrees that “flushable” wipes are flushable.
Tree roots in the sewer lateral. This is the cause most people miss. Pre-1970s homes in Norwood, Stepney, St Peters, and across the inner-east still have original earthenware or terracotta sewer laterals laid in the 1920s and 30s. Mature jacarandas and plane trees have spent decades sending roots through the joint gaps. A “blocked toilet” in one of these homes is often a sewer lateral problem 5-15 metres past the back of the house, not a toilet problem at all.
Try These Toilet Unblocking Steps Before Calling a Plumber
For a single-event blockage where you know what went down, one of these usually works. If you’ve tried two or three and water is still rising, stop and call us on (08) 8152 9100 before the bowl overflows.
1. Wait. Counterintuitive but real. A simple paper-and-water blockage often clears itself within 10-15 minutes as the paper softens. Don’t flush again – the second flush is what causes the overflow.
2. Use a flange plunger, not a cup plunger. A flange plunger has a soft rubber extension that seats into the toilet outlet and creates the seal you actually need. Plunge firmly with a vertical motion for 15-20 seconds at a time. Most paper-and-waste blockages clear within two or three rounds.
3. Try a toilet auger (closet auger). A toilet-specific auger is a 90cm cable inside a curved housing that protects the porcelain. About $30 from Bunnings. It reaches past the trap into the waste arm and grabs or breaks up what’s blocking flow.
4. Hot – not boiling – water with dish soap. A bucket of hot water (not boiling – boiling water can crack the porcelain) poured from waist height with a generous squirt of dish soap can break up a borderline-grease blockage.
Please don’t use Drano or any caustic drain cleaner. Caustic soda doesn’t dissolve toilet paper, wet wipes, or anything else common in toilet blockages, and the chemical reaction generates heat that can damage the trap, the wax pan seal, and the bowl glaze. We see avoidable repair jobs every month from neighbours who tried this.
Time to call if water is still rising after a flush, the bowl won’t refill, multiple fixtures are affected, or the same toilet has blocked twice in a month.
How We Clear a Blocked Toilet in Adelaide
No two blocked toilets are identical. We work through a diagnostic order that protects the porcelain and finds the actual cause rather than masking it.
- Diagnose the symptom before reaching for a tool
- Closet auger first - protects the porcelain
- Mechanical snake or hydro-jet for deeper blockages
- CCTV drain inspection for recurring issues
- Pipe relining or excavation for structural damage
- Clean Home Guarantee - the space left cleaner than we found it
Diagnose, then act. First question: is the bowl filling and not draining (blockage past the trap), or not filling at all (cistern or rim jet issue)? Second question: are other fixtures affected? Those two answers determine whether we’re working on the toilet itself or on something downstream.
Repair if it’s structural. Damaged sewer laterals get pipe relining where suitable, or excavation where they don’t. All work meets AS/NZS 3500, the Australian Standard for plumbing and drainage, performed under our Licence PGE #360928 with oversight from South Australia’s Office of the Technical Regulator.
Blocked Toilet Services for Adelaide Homes
We cover the full range of blocked toilet work, from a same-day clear to a full sewer-lateral repair when the cause is structural.
Fast Clear. Same-day attendance for routine blockages. Closet auger first, then mechanical snake or hydro-jet depending on what we find, with the bowl, pan seal, and floor protected throughout.
Diagnose & Inspect. When the toilet keeps blocking or symptoms point downstream, we run CCTV drain inspections through the waste arm and sewer lateral to find the real cause – tree root intrusion, pipe collapse, scale build-up, or installation defects.
Repair & Replace. Pipe relining for cracked or root-damaged sewer laterals where the no-dig fix suits the pipe. Targeted excavation where it doesn’t. Full toilet suite replacement when the porcelain itself is past saving.

Questions We Always Get Asked About Toilet Blockages
Q: How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in Adelaide?
It depends on the cause and where the blockage sits. A straightforward paper-and-water clear with a closet auger is a short visit. A hydro-jet clear of a scaled sewer lateral takes longer. A CCTV inspection on a recurring problem is a different scope again. Rather than quote a number that won’t match your situation, we diagnose first and give you an upfront price before any work starts. You approve the price before we begin.
Q: Can I use Drano or chemical drain cleaners on a blocked toilet?
We strongly recommend against it. Caustic soda and bleach-based drain cleaners don’t actually dissolve the things that block toilets – toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitary products, and foreign objects all resist caustic chemistry. What the chemicals do dissolve or damage is the wax pan seal that connects the toilet to the floor flange, the rubber seals inside the cistern outlet, and the glaze on porcelain over repeat exposure. The chemical reaction also generates heat that can stress a porcelain bowl. We see avoidable repair jobs every month from neighbours who tried this first. Mechanical clearing – a flange plunger, a closet auger, or our equipment – is safer for your toilet and for Adelaide’s wastewater system.
Q: Are "flushable" wet wipes actually flushable?
No. Whatever the packaging says. Australian and international plumbing trade consensus is that “flushable” wipes don’t break down in domestic plumbing the way toilet paper does. They retain their structural integrity through the trap and into the sewer lateral, where they snag, catch debris, and form the fatberg-style masses that drive the largest portion of preventable toilet blockages we see. Bin them, don’t flush them. Same goes for sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds, dental floss, and paper towels.
Q: How quickly can you get to a blocked toilet emergency?
We target a 60-minute response across metropolitan Adelaide, 24/7*. Call us on (08) 8152 9100 and we’ll have a licensed plumber on the way.
Q: Does your work meet Australian Standards and what's your warranty?
Yes. All blocked toilet repair, drain clearing, and sewer-lateral work meets AS/NZS 3500, the Australian Standard for plumbing and drainage. Our team holds Licence PGE #360928 and operates under the oversight of South Australia’s Office of the Technical Regulator. You receive documentation of any structural repair work for insurance or compliance purposes.
All workmanship is covered by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. If anything we’ve cleared, repaired, or relined fails because of how we did the work, we come back and fix it at no charge, for as long as you own the home. Parts and materials carry manufacturer warranties on top of that.
Q: My toilet keeps blocking - should I repair the suite or replace it?
It depends on the cause. If the toilet itself is fine and the recurring blockage is in the sewer lateral (tree roots, scale, or pipe damage), repair the lateral and keep the toilet. If the bowl has internal scale build-up, hairline cracks, or a worn-out flush mechanism, a replacement suite often makes more sense than ongoing repairs, and our toilet repairs and replacement team can supply and fit it. We give you an honest read at the diagnosis stage. For a full suite replacement, ask about Humm – flexible payment plans* with no deposit, fast approval, and no large single payment to absorb.
