Blocked Shower Drains Adelaide
Blocked Shower Solutions for Every Adelaide Bathroom
A shower drain that’s slowing down ruins the part of the day that’s supposed to start it well. Water rises around your feet. Soap scum floats. The drain gurgles. By the time you’re standing in two inches of water rinsing shampoo, you’re either pulling on rubber gloves or reaching for the phone.
We’ve spent 15+ years clearing blocked shower drains across every Adelaide home configuration, from the original shower-over-bath setups in heritage Norwood cottages to the modern tiled cubicles in new-build homes. Our licensed team (Licence PGE #360928) turns up the same day, finds whether the blockage is in the trap, the waste arm, or the line further down, and clears it without damaging the chrome or the tile. No guesswork, no wall holes.
Every job is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee, 260+ five-star Google reviews from Adelaide neighbours, our Clean Home Guarantee, and our We Fix It or It’s Free* promise. If we can’t clear your blocked shower, you don’t pay.
Try These Shower Unblocking Steps Before Calling a Plumber
For an early-stage shower blockage, one of the steps below usually works. If you’ve tried two or three and the drain still won’t clear, it’s time to call us on a professional plumber.
- Lift the grate and pull out the hair-and-scum clump by hand
- Pour a full kettle of boiling water with a squirt of dish soap
- Try half a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar
- Use a $5 zip-it tool from Bunnings to pull deeper hair clogs
- Plunge firmly for 20 seconds with the shower base sealed
- Avoid Drano - it warps PVC and won't dissolve hair anyway
Time to call us if water won’t move at all, multiple fixtures are gurgling, water is backing up through other drains while you shower, or you’ve tried the steps above without success. Same-day metro bookings on (08) 8152 9100.
What's Actually Happening When Your Shower Won't Drain
The plumbing under a shower is simpler than under a sink, but it fails in a more predictable way. Water enters through a floor waste grate, drops into a P-trap (the U-bend that holds water to block sewer gas), exits through a waste arm to the branch drain inside the wall or floor, then joins your home’s main waste stack. Almost every shower blockage forms in the same place: the trap, or just past it. And almost every blockage forms from the same two ingredients.
Hair plus soap scum. Hair strands are made of keratin, a protein the human stomach can’t digest, let alone a household drain. Each shower contributes a few dozen strands. They catch on the grate edges and the trap. Soap scum (the fatty residue of bar soap, body wash, conditioner) coats every strand like glue. The matrix that builds up isn’t just hair, it’s hair held together by a fatty mesh that hot water alone can’t dissolve.
Adelaide’s hard water makes it worse. Calcium and magnesium in our mains water deposits a thin scale on the inside of drain pipes over the years. That scale is rough at a microscopic level, which makes it perfect for hair to catch on. The same shower drain in Brisbane (soft water) might run clean for a decade; in Adelaide it builds up a noticeable matrix in two or three years.
Older inner-east homes have a third problem. In Norwood, Stepney, and St Peters, many pre-1970 homes still have galvanised or lead waste arms. Both materials corrode from the inside out, leaving rough pitted internal walls that catch debris far faster than modern PVC. A blocked shower in a 1925 cottage is rarely just a hair clog, it’s hair plus calcium plus a waste arm reaching the end of its life.
How We Clear a Blocked Shower Drain in Adelaide
No two shower blockages are identical. We work through the same diagnostic order every time rather than jumping to the most expensive tool. Most jobs end at step one or two; the rest of the sequence is there for the harder cases.
- Lift the grate and inspect the P-trap, where most blockages sit
- Run a hand-fed mechanical snake through the waste arm
- Hydro-jet to scour hard-water scale and biofilm from pipe walls
- CCTV inspection traces the line for cracks, collapses, or root intrusion
- Pipe relining or targeted repair when CCTV shows structural damage
- Clean Home Guarantee: tiles and grates left cleaner than we found them
All repair work meets AS/NZS 3500, the Australian Standard for plumbing and drainage, performed under our Licence PGE #360928 with oversight from South Australia’s Office of the Technical Regulator. Where the pipe has fully collapsed, targeted excavation is sometimes unavoidable. Most jobs never get that far.
Shower Drain Clearing Services for Adelaide Homes
We cover the full range of shower drain work, from a quick trap clean to full waste-arm replacement when the pipe is past saving.
Fast Clear. Same-day attendance for routine shower blockages. Trap inspection, mechanical snake or hydro-jet depending on the cause, P-trap reassembly with a fresh seal, drain tested under flow.
Diagnose & Inspect. Recurring shower blockages or multi-fixture symptoms get CCTV drain inspections, where we trace the waste arm and branch drain on a live monitor to find scale build-up, structural damage, or downstream issues.
Repair & Reline. Damaged or corroded waste arms (common in older inner-east homes) get pipe relining where suitable, or full trap and waste-arm replacement where relining isn’t the right fix.

Questions We Always Get Asked About Blocked Showers
Q: How much does it cost to unblock a shower in Adelaide?
It depends on what the camera or trap inspection reveals. A simple grate-and-trap clean is a short visit. A hydro-jet clear of a heavily scaled waste arm takes longer. A CCTV inspection on a recurring problem is a different scope again. Rather than quote a number that won’t match your situation, we diagnose first and give you an upfront price before any work starts. You approve the price before we begin.
Q: Will boiling water actually unclog a shower drain?
For shallow soap-scum blockages, yes. A full kettle of boiling water with dish soap chasing it can dissolve enough of the fatty matrix to restore flow. For deep hair clogs, boiling water doesn’t help much, because hair is keratin protein and doesn’t dissolve in heat. If two pours of boiling water haven’t restored proper flow, the blockage is mostly hair and needs mechanical clearing.
Q: What do plumbers recommend instead of Drano for a blocked shower?
Drano and similar caustic-soda cleaners react with soap (a process called saponification) but don’t actually break down hair, which is the main ingredient in most shower clogs. The chemical reaction also generates heat that can warp PVC waste arms and damage chrome-plated grates. We recommend mechanical clearing instead: lift the grate and pull the clog by hand or with a $5 zip-it tool from Bunnings, follow with boiling water and dish soap to clear residual scum, and call a plumber if the drain still won’t run. Mechanical clearing is safer for your pipes and for Adelaide’s wastewater system.
Q: How do you unblock a badly blocked shower?
For a fully blocked shower (water won’t move at all), try this sequence. First, lift the floor waste grate and remove any visible hair or debris by hand. Second, run a flexible plastic zip-it tool down the drain to pull deeper hair clogs out of the trap. Third, if water still won’t move, plunge with a cup plunger: fill the shower base, seal the cup, plunge firmly for 20 seconds. If none of these have restored flow, the blockage is past the trap or in the waste arm itself, and you need professional tools. Call (08) 8152 9100.
Q: How fast can you respond, and what's your warranty on the work?
We target a 60-minute response across metropolitan Adelaide, 24/7*. Call us on (08) 8152 9100 and we’ll have a licensed plumber (Licence PGE #360928) on the way. All workmanship is covered by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee: if anything we’ve cleared, repaired, or installed fails because of how we did the work, we come back and fix it at no charge, for as long as you own the home. Parts and materials carry manufacturer warranties on top of that.
Q: Is my shower blockage pointing to a bigger problem?
Sometimes, yes. If your toilet is gurgling when you shower, water is backing up through other fixtures, or multiple drains are slow at the same time, the blockage isn’t isolated to your shower; it’s likely a main-line issue. See our blocked drains service for main-line clearing. If your shower drain is slow plus you’re seeing damp patches on adjacent walls or a musty smell that doesn’t fade, the underlying cause may be a waterproofing failure that calls for a full wet-area assessment. See our bathroom renovations page for that scenario. If the real problem is in your toilet or kitchen sink rather than the shower, see our blocked toilet or blocked sink services for the fixture-specific fix.
