Birkenhead Plumbers, On Time & Upfront
The bath tap won’t stop dripping, the toilet refills itself at odd hours, and the yard drain gurgles every time the washing machine empties. Tell us what you’re noticing and we’ll trace it back to the part that has actually failed.
Years on these Peninsula streets have taught our plumbers how slowly water leaves a flat block, so the whole run gets checked before anything is suggested. Ring when it suits; in Birkenhead we aim for a same day response. Expect a fixed price in writing, laid out with options, and no work until you give the go-ahead.

What Birkenhead Customers Can Expect From Us
Adelaide Expert Plumbing & Gas started with Michael Heinrich, Colin Archer-Bourke and a van, and a view that plenty of people had been let down by plumbers who were late, unclear about cost or careless in someone’s home. Six of us now carry that same view onto every job.
In Birkenhead, a lot of the work is in houses that have seen a century of changes. We’re patient with old pipework, honest about what needs replacing now and what can wait, and careful in the heritage-listed homes on Mead Street. Our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee covers what we do, and it’s a big part of why customers have left us more than 260 five-star Google reviews.

Plumbing Services Across Birkenhead Homes & Riverside Businesses
Birkenhead is mostly separate houses, many of them older homes whose plumbing has been replaced in stages, with newer homes built between them and a few heritage-listed homes on Mead Street. It sits on the flat, low-lying river side of the Peninsula, and around Hughes Street and Close Street council stormwater now runs to a detention basin and pump station under the Naval Reserve. Along Elder Road on the riverside there’s heavy industry, where the work is commercial plumbing. Here’s what homes and businesses call us for.
General Plumbing
Taps, mixers and valves in houses that have been re-plumbed a bit at a time over a century. We fix leaking taps and the valves behind them, and point out anything else close behind.
Blocked Drains
Sand and groundwater getting into cracked pipes is a common cause on the river side of the Peninsula. We jet blocked drains clear from $79, T&C's Apply, then camera the line.
Hot Water Systems
One unit usually serves the whole of a three-bedroom Birkenhead house, so when it fails everybody notices. We repair it or replace it neatly, and check the valves while we're there.
Emergency Plumber, Day or Night
A burst pipe under an old timber floor, or a sewer backing up into the laundry. Ring us at any hour, weekends and public holidays included.
Taps & Toilets
On some newer homes the toilet may run off a rainwater tank, so a cistern that won't fill can be a pump or switch-over fault. We check that as well as washers, valves and pans.
Stormwater Drains
Council now sends water from the low-lying streets around Hughes Street to a basin and pump station under the Naval Reserve. We look after the stormwater pipes between your downpipes and the kerb.
Pipe Relining
Long drains run from an older house to the street, through sand over clay. Relining seals the cracked sections from the inside, without digging up the yard.
Burst Pipes
Mixed old and newer pipework means more joins, and joins are where a burst pipe tends to start. We isolate the water, repair the section and check the pipe on either side.
Bathroom Renovations
Plenty of houses here were built with one bathroom. Adding a second, or moving the laundry, means laying drainage with the right fall on flat, sandy ground, and we plan that properly.
Five-Star Feedback From Customers Around Birkenhead

Why Birkenhead Homeowners & Landlords Choose Us
We’re sitting on 260+ five-star Google reviews, and they aren’t full of heroics. They talk about plumbers who showed up when expected, quotes that didn’t change and houses left tidy. Ordinary and reliable, and that’s fine by us.
Birkenhead’s plumbing has its own quirks. On the river side of the Peninsula the water table can sit close to the surface, with clay bands in the sand below, and in our experience a cracked underground pipe there tends to draw in water and fine sand until the drain keeps blocking. We find the break with a camera and repair or reline that section, rather than clearing the same line again and again. The same goes for the riverside businesses on Elder Road. Upfront quotes, agreed onsite before we start, mean you know the cost first.
Servicing Birkenhead & the Rest of the Peninsula
We cover all of Birkenhead, from the bridge end around Riverview Street and Semaphore Road to Mead Street, Fletcher Road and the streets up towards Hargrave Street. Inside those streets we also work around the Naval Reserve on Heath Street, the homes off Hughes and Close Streets, and the riverside yards on Elder Road. Across the Birkenhead Bridge is Port Adelaide. Largs Bay touches Birkenhead at one corner and runs out to the beach, and Semaphore lies west beyond Exeter. Further south, past the Port, is West Lakes, and inland we look after Kilkenny as well. If your suburb isn’t mentioned, check every suburb we service.

Questions Birkenhead Locals Ask Before They Call
Most Birkenhead questions come from owners of older houses, and they’re usually about drains that keep blocking or yards that won’t drain. We’ve answered those here, along with a few about heritage homes, riverside businesses, pricing and getting someone out quickly. For anything else, see our FAQs or call 08 8152 9100.
Our Street Near The Naval Reserve Got New Drains. Why Does Our Yard Still Hold Water?
The council’s work improved the street system, sending water from streets such as Hughes Street and Close Street to a detention basin and pump station under the Birkenhead Naval Reserve. It didn’t change the pipes on private property. Downpipes, yard pits and the line out to the kerb are generally the property owner’s to look after, and on flat ground those pipes have very little fall, so leaves and silt settle in them quickly. We clear them, camera for broken or dipped sections, and repair what’s needed so the water actually reaches the upgraded system.
Why Does My Birkenhead Drain Keep Blocking With Sand?
Birkenhead sits on the river side of the Peninsula, where the ground is sand with clay bands below and the water table can be close to the surface. In our experience, once an older underground pipe cracks or a joint opens, it tends to take in groundwater and fine sand, which settles and blocks the line again soon after it’s cleared. We camera the drain to find the break, then repair or reline that section so the sand has no way in.
My House Dates From The Early 1900s. Does All The Pipework Need Replacing?
Not necessarily. Houses of that age have usually had their plumbing replaced in stages, so it’s common to find original, mid-century and modern pipe on the same property. We inspect first, including a camera through the drains, and tell you what’s sound, what’s close to failing and what can wait. Often a targeted repair, or relining one section, is the sensible answer rather than replacing everything at once.
Can You Work On The Heritage-Listed Homes On Mead Street?
Yes. The two-storey homes on Mead Street are heritage listed and share walls with the homes beside them, so pipework and stacks can run closer to next door than you’d expect. We find the fault precisely before opening anything up and keep disturbance to original fabric to a minimum. If the work would alter the building itself, it’s worth checking heritage requirements with the council first.
Do You Handle Plumbing For The Industrial Sites On The Riverside?
Yes. The riverside end of Birkenhead along Elder Road is industrial land with very different needs to a house: amenities blocks, wash-down areas, trade connections and backflow protection on the water supply. We assess and fit backflow devices to AS/NZS 3500, maintain amenities, and plan the work around shifts so the site keeps running.
What Will A Plumber Cost In Birkenhead?
Every job gets an upfront quote from our team before any work begins, and the only set price we advertise is blocked drains from $79, T&C’s Apply. Our receptionist doesn’t have access to a price book, because their job is keeping the team on schedule, dispatched to jobs and making sure customers are looked after. So the plumber quotes onsite, with options, and you never feel pressured. If you’re calling outside regular business hours, a call-out fee may apply, so call our friendly team to check our availability. We’re on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Is A Plumber Available After Hours In Birkenhead?
Yes, we’re available 24/7, 365 days a year. When it’s urgent, like a burst pipe or sewage backing up, we can typically be there within 60 minutes, and when it can safely wait we aim for a same day response. Every plumber on our team holds a current licence and is police-checked, our contractor licence as a business is PGE #360928, and plumbing work in South Australia is regulated by Consumer and Business Services.
